Unfortunately, food insecurity has been on the rise in Canada during the pandemic, and food donation programs have become more important than ever. According to a recent report released by the non-profit Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC), food insecurity now affects 1 in 7 Canadians.

At the MTCC, we recognize that being a good neighbour and helping others, especially during this challenging time, is very important. We are navigating the pandemic alongside our city, and our team has been working hard to donate food as much as possible.

Recently, our team found a way to donate nutritious food to the Toronto District School Board’s student nutrition program, one of our main local charity partners. Our facility has been donating to this important local program for years, and in the last few weeks, we donated over 7,900 items, including granola bars, snickerdoodle cookies and healthy loaves.

The TDSB student nutrition program provides healthy, nutritious food to Toronto students who may not have access to healthy food at home due to circumstances beyond their control. For many students, from elementary to high school, school is where they get the nutrition they need to thrive. Some may be new to Canada, some may have difficult family situations, and some may even be homeless.

As well, student nutrition programs have encountered a few hurdles due to new rules and regulations around food safety during this challenging time. We intend on increasing our support for the TDSB student nutrition program in various ways.

The recent MTCC nutritious food donations were delivered directly to Tecumseh Middle School, Golf Road PS, Willow Park PS, WA Porter CI, and Birchmount CI in the Toronto area.

I would like to take a moment and thank you for the lovely little loaf cakes that were donated to my Breakfast Program. As we know breakfast is the most important meal of the day and what a nice surprise for the students to have such a special treat. Our program serves high school students and they are always hungry. On a regular basis we serve 250 students per day. Having those little loaf cakes went over so well the students were politely asking for more. What a great sign of something enjoyed so much. Thank you for thinking of us. It was greatly appreciated.

Thank our charity partner, the TDSB student nutrition program, for their continued effort to make a difference in the lives of children in our community. We would also like to recognize our nutrition program liason, Anthony Durward, who is instrumental in facilitating our donations.

Aside from the TDSB donations, our centre has also found ways to donate food from cancelled or postponed events in other ways during the pandemic. We’ve donated house made pizza, water, milk, potatoes, salad, vegetables, pastries and fruits. These items went directly to our local charity partners at Margaret’s Housing, Good Shepherd, The Scott Mission and organizations who help people with disabilities who have to stay home.

We encourage everyone to do their part and give back. For more information on our food donation and in kind donation programs, please visit: https://www.mtccc.com/facility/corporate_social_responsibility/
